Anyone who knows Bombay today or from a previous era should sit down with Shanghvi's book; it will probably suck you in and make you yearn to read more about the characters once the last page has turned. It starts with great notes; great story line and when you reach part two it becomes just another story drawing resemblance to Jessica Lal murder case.

By the time you reach part three; it tries to recapture your attention but it is too late.Shanghavi definitely has a flair for language, and there are some absolutely beautiful lines sprinkled liberally throughout this book. Shanghvi's phrases are cutting and sharp and made me balk more than once at their raw energy, if not grotesqueness, but parts two and three of the novel are less charming. As life turns upside down for all of the characters, loneliness sets in, and the reader is left to swallow instance upon instance of devastation. Shanghvi is obviously a talented writer but I would have liked this story better minus about 130 pages and some pruning of the melodrama. However, that is not what this book is really about. Now I wonder who put that list together. So, I picked this up when Google threw it at me as one of the top 10 books on Mumbai.
