I was lucky in that at least 2 of the departments I took courses from usually provided articles over books for weekly reading, the other classes, not so much.For STEM students though it's just as bad if not worse. More suicides have happened on campus as well, not necessarily at Bahen. I walked back to my dorm seeing the police lights still flashing outside the building.One of the biggest issues is that there's so many factors at play here. On Sunday, March 17, a student died by suicide at the Bahen Centre for Information Technology. I myself only got in as soon as I did because I had attempted suicide and had a professor refer me (Ms.K, if somehow you're reading this, I owe you my life, thank you so much!) U of T and caring about their students has never gone hand in hand.Sigh....I think if u meet any bad things, better to share it with your friend or family. This is the third death in the Bahen Centre over the past two years. What wasn't conveyed to us students, however, was that it was meant to cover instances where someone’s mental health was causing them to become immediately violent or dangerous to roommates, other students, or potentially to themselves. but city services are overworked too. At least 3 students in the past 2 years have committed suicide in the same spot in Bahen Centre. Was it mentioned in another article? Not having this communicated to us effectively made many of us afraid to even seek out mental health services due to the risk of being sent home and not being able to finish semesters we had already paid for. Got into CAPs and the shrink put me on Clorazapam and told me I had 'daddy issues'. That's all I was allotted. As far as suicides go here, it is an epidemic, but until the University starts taking responsibility and fixing what it can, it is only going to continue happening.This is an epidemic. Stir all these factors together and you have the perfect cocktail for severe depression and anxiety that does not look like it is getting better anytime soon.So yes, where this suicide (please let’s not beat around the bush, let's call it what it is), is incredibly tragic, for many of us it is not all that surprising and, again, is becoming somewhat more normalized. At times it felt like certain professors were actively working to make my time there as excruciatingly difficult as possible. The U of T continues to cut mental health services for students and they have failed to install deterrent barriers at Bahen preventing more people from using it to end their lives. The death was followed by student protests that criticized the U of T administration for its inadequate response and lack of mental health resources. Highlights of not so wonderful profs include: inaccessible ones, ones that won’t get back to your emails, who have inaccessible office hours, who wont compromise on any part of the syllabus regardless of the fresh hell the students are going through, professors who wont make exceptions for you while your accessibility services are being set up, professors who will not, for any reason, take minutes late assignments, purposefully assigning the most obtuse readings possible (hard readings do not always equal good readings), professors who ban certain forms of note taking in class, who do not take the time to reexplain concepts that might be difficult, professors who do not allow food or beverages in their class for any reason, essentially: profs that have little compassion for students and make it unnecessarily difficult to be in their classes.This all then is compounded by external factors such as funding, where it’s coming from, how much you’re getting (if any) from grants, writing grant proposals, submitting things for conferences, applying for grad schools and all the tests that come with that, the accuracy of the TTC, if you need to work outside school to support yourself, your base level mental health, your physical health, how involved your parents are in your school career and how much pressure they place on you, if you’re living somewhere without a meal plan then meal prep and being able to afford food, the cost of living here in general is a big stressor for a lot of people, your social life (or lack there of as many of us joke, I know I haven’t connected with certain friends in over a year just due to stress and quantity of work), your family if you’re a caretaker within the structure, and many other things I’m likely forgetting.
