tamas bhisham sahni

Bhishm Sahni,is an account of sufferings of people during a time when India was fighting for her independence and rise of Pakistan was inevitable. Both these Governments did not plan the transfer o large number of humans wel.

Overall a very good book.It was scary to read stories based on Communal violence that took place before the Partition of 1947. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for literature in 1998] and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2002. by Penguin India BHISHAM SAHNI (1915-2003) was an iconic writer who transformed the landscape of Hindi literature.

Richard, the Deputy Commissioner call a meeting of the two communities.

On his return to India Bhisham Sahni resumed teaching at Delhi College, and also edited the reputed literary magazine Nai Kahaniyan from 1965 to 1967. In hindsight, Partition was enforced in a thoughtless, naïve fashion. Enraged Muslims massacre scores of Hindus and Sikhs, who, in turn, kill every Muslim they can find.

A South Indian unThis was one of those few books that I pick up every year to impress my mother :) and then I gradually pick them up to read myself.

Since this book was translated, I felt like there was an element of untrustworthiness. Written in the mid 70's, based on a time period which is like a few months before of India's independence and subsequent partition, the way story progresses for a poignantly open ending, it just felt like someone removed the rug below my feet.

After Partition, he began to teach at Dehli University College.

On the other hand it falls a bit short as a novel.

After the violence is curbed two refugee camps are set up to handle the uprooted citizens. The British Partition of Indian had countless disastrous consequences, many of which are rendered in heartbreaking fashion in Bhisham Sahni’s novel, Tamas.

The book takes you through some of the worst faces of humans, and of course, in that process, brings out some raw emotions.

Two Batalions of the Army were incharge of safe transport. Tamas is a disturbing book. I liked it a lot in many places, but by the time I got to the end, it felt somehow incomplete.Finished this book with mixed feelings. Or maybe not. Sahni witnessed the partition of India, thus the book is based on his personal experience. The Book starts with Nathu being asked by an influential Murad Ali to kill a pig which was required for veterinary purpose. Reading books about Partition has never been easy.

We’d love your help. He could see what the British government aimed at and this is exactly What he writes about.

Its a very beautifully written and really gives a goosebumps while reading.

It is based on the Hindi novel of the same name by Bhisham Sahni (1974), which won the author the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975. The writer was a thoughtful and clever man. In 1952 he moved to Delhi and was appointed Lecturer in English at Delhi College (now Zakir Husain College), University of Delhi. The narrative is largely unbiased, and brings out the human imperfections which surface out during these times to change the course of lives. This book is deservedly one of the greatest in Hindi literature. I do not think it is a very good piece of literature, but Tamas should be read and studied by anyone who wants to explore a perspective on the partition other than a British one. The citizens want that the record clerk should note down their story of flight to border during the riots but he is only interested in completing his daily work. He could see what the British government aimed at and this is exactly What he writes about. If you haven't read this, you must.

Two weeks ago I picked this book from the library only by chance and I honestly didn’t expect I would find this interesting as I do. It was scary to read stories based on Communal violence that took place before the Partition of 1947.

I started reading this last weekend as we had to travel back to our home town for a family function, I actually picked it to check the public's reaction on a very old, acclaimed and that too a Hindi book.

[right after the amazing anxiety-inducing pig-killing Nathu section [the spectacularly written scene of Nathu killing the pig (later having to deal with the guilt after realizing he'd unwittingly started the riots), the Hindu Sabha boys killing the perfume seller, the 70-year-old Harim Singh and his wife having to watch their shop burn down and then seeking shelter at a Muslim household, the forceful conversion of his son to Islam, the Sikh women and children jumping into the well... [ when the British plane finally flew over the villages, the pilot waving and smiling at the villagers, promising peace and order.

It can readily overthrow the popular misconception created, that a communal riot springs spontaneously, at random on account of people running maniacs. Although I read the book in English, I would recommend everyone to read it in Hindi as many words translated do not fulfil the essence of the book. For a person like me, belonging to a generation who did not have to witness the Partition, I cannot put my sorrow into words. The writer was a thoughtful and clever man. It's a must-read book for all.Bhisham Sahni was born in Rawalpindi, British India.

A reminder of what will transpire if we let go of our humanityTamas is a classic story of the partition of India, yet it is characterized by its many narratives and strong underlying themes of religion. Krishan Baldev Vaid said, "His voice, both as a writer and a man, was serene and pure and resonant with humane reassurances. Most intense and heart breaking commentary on the disturbing events of Indian independence. It involved Muslim league, Congress, Hindu Mahasabha, Communist, Sikh Association and British Government.
