Experts are putting machine learning systems through their paces using IQ tests, which measure a number of reasoning skillsResearchers at Google's DeepMind project in London used puzzles known as 'Raven's Progressive Matrices'.Developed by John C Raven in 1936, the Matrices measure participants' ability to make sense and meaning out of complex or confusing data.They also test their ability to perceive new patterns and relationships, and to forge largely non-verbal constructs that make it easy to handle complexity. The intelligent system, developed as part of Google's DeepMind AI program, has taught itself to visualise any angle on a space in a static photographAI systems rely on artificial neural networks (ANNs), which try to simulate the way the brain works in order to learn.ANNs can be trained to recognise patterns in information - including speech, text data, or visual images - and are the basis for a large number of the developments in AI over recent years.Conventional AI uses input to 'teach' an algorithm about a particular subject by feeding it massive amounts of information.
